One conversation, different accounts

One conversation should not require everyone to use the same application—or pretend everyone has the same kind of account.

Choose your doorway

  • Drupal-only: read and reply here. What should a Matrix participant see?
  • Matrix-only: read and reply in the announced thread. What should Drupal display when there is no linked Drupal user? The presenter will explain the policy actually configured here.
  • Both: open My Matrix identities and explore proving ownership of an existing Matrix account.

Watch two different operations

The presenter will link an existing Matrix identity with a private verification message, then show signing into Matrix using Drupal through OIDC. This demo uses Drupal/Simple OAuth and MAS; Keycloak is the drupal.org architectural context to discuss.

Linking an existing identity does not merge Matrix accounts. An OIDC-managed sender is separate from an editable profile alias; linking does not by itself grant posting rights or permission to send as every linked account.

Your assignment

Reply to a starter prompt from whichever interface you prefer. What should be shown beside an unlinked contribution? What would make the linking process understandable and trustworthy? Do not paste verification codes, private messages, credentials, or email addresses into this public discussion.

Comments labelled ‘Starter’ or ‘Workshop’ are prepared discussion prompts, not independent audience testimony. Participant replies are real contributions.

Starter: I only have a Drupal account

Workshop starter prompt: I want to read and reply here without installing a chat client. How should my message appear in Matrix: from the site bot with attribution, or from a managed Matrix identity? What must not be misleading?

Starter: I only have a Matrix account

Workshop starter prompt: I already use Matrix on another homeserver and do not want another login. Should Drupal show my Matrix ID, a display name with an external-identity label, or require linking before importing my replies? Explain the moderation trade-off.

Starter counterpoint: unlinked is not impersonating

Workshop starter counterpoint: an external participant can be a legitimate community member without a Drupal account. Separate ‘no linked Drupal account’ from ‘Matrix identity not authenticated’ and from ‘not allowed to post’. What wording would communicate that distinction?

Starter: linking is not the same as OIDC login

Workshop starter prompt: verifying my existing Matrix account proves ownership; signing into Matrix through Drupal can provision a different managed account. Where should the UI explain the difference? After the demo, check whether the Matrix reply has the correct Drupal attribution—not just the same display name.
